Oswald Chambers wrote, “Get into the real work of intercession, and remember it is a work, a work that taxes every power“. A pretty captivating statement especially since the title of that devotional was “Holiness V. Hardness Towards God”!

The idea of worshipping God has slowly and conveniently slipped through a lot of fingers. By my own observation I’d say that today’s Christians are a lot less willing to put themselves out there when their faith requires it. Yet the Scriptures continually show disciples of Jesus who were called by Jesus Himself to offer themselves–to give something up, to endure hardship and suffering, and even be willing to die!

You just never know how the Lord is going to bless your time with Him. You can count on something for sure, but what? I’m putting a new tag line on my “morning devos”: “An eager son with his generous Father”.

It all started with my devotions this morning as the Lord led me to Matthew 14, where Jesus performs (at least) 4 staggering miracles: healing the sick; feeding 5000 with only 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish; walking on water; calming a violent storm.

But there was something else here that actually caught my attention, held it, and really inspired me. I noticed that just before His ministry to the thousands (which begins at verse 14, “When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, He had compassion on them…“) and just before He comes to His disciples on the lake (verse 25, “During the fourth watch of the night Jesus went out to them…“) He goes to the Father, alone:

I was excited today, because they were walking down the street–2 women with materials in hand, going from door to door. It just had to be the Jehovah’s Witnesses. “Lord bring them my way!” was my quick prayer, because for 2 years now they had conspicuously passed my house. (I think I was “black-listed” at some point, because I gave the earlier visitors a challenging time as they shared their beliefs).

I called to my wife to come downstairs fast so that we could “tag team” our inevitable confrontation (always a good thing to do, by the way; notice how they always go in pairs?) So I answered the door after their first knock…
